Try Hockey for Free – Somerset Youth Hockey Association
Join the Somerset Youth Hockey Association (SYHA) for our Try Hockey for Free program! This beginner-friendly program introduces young athletes to the sport of hockey in a free, fun, supportive, and stress-free environment with instructors with 20+ years of experience.
Program Overview
- Cost: 100% FREE (Includes free equipment usage with a refundable deposit).
- Eligibility: Open to children ages 8 and under (birth years 2018 and younger). Per Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA) rules, participants must reside within the Somerset, WI or Osceola, WI school districts.
- Program Type: One-time program designed for first-time skaters who have not previously registered with SYHA.
- Volunteer Requirements: None! Parents can sit back, relax, and enjoy watching their child learn.
What to Expect: Skate First, Stick Second!
Our program is structured to give your player maximum confidence on the ice:
- Fall/Early Winter (Learning to Skate): The initial focus is purely on skating fundamentals—getting up, balance, stopping, and maneuvering without the distraction of holding gear.
- After Christmas (Sticks & Small Games): Once skaters have built their confidence and edge work, we introduce hockey sticks! Players will transition into basic puck handling, shooting, and mini-games to experience the thrill of real hockey action.

Try Hockey for Free – 6-Week Wednesday Sessions
Sessions run on Wednesday evenings at the Somerset Ice Arena:
- Week 1: Wednesday, November 4th - 6:30pm to 7:10pm
- Week 2: Wednesday, November 11th - 6:30pm to 7:10pm
- Week 3: Wednesday, November 18th - 6:30pm to 7:10pm
- Week 4: Wednesday, December 2nd - 6:30pm to 7:10pm
- Week 5: Wednesday, December 9th - 6:30pm to 7:10pm
- Week 6: Wednesday, December 9th - 6:30pm to 7:10pm

No On-Ice Parent Volunteers Needed
We’ve got trained instructors and helpers on the ice each week. Once your child progresses into the Jr. Spartan/Mite programs, we’ll reach out for parent help.
Looking Ahead – Mini-Spartans Program
After completing the 6 THFF sessions, your child will have the opportunity to join Mini-Spartans for the second half of the season. This next step introduces sticks and hockey-specific drills in a fun and supportive environment! The registration for the second session, Mini Spartans will open in December.
Additional Free Community Events
Keep the momentum going! Join us for these extra free ice events throughout the season:
- Skate with the High School Spartans & Stars: Wednesday, November 25, 2026 – Skaters get the opportunity to take the ice alongside players from the Somerset High School Spartan boys and Western Wisconsin Stars girls teams.
- Skate with Santa: Wednesday, December TBD! Bring the whole family to hit the ice and meet Santa Clause
